2021 The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid

written by Jenny Furniss directed by Clare Denton

8th-11th December 2021

Whilst I was prancing about as a horse in The Three Musketeers pantomime of 2019, I was asked if I’d consider directing the following year. I had a think and replied yes, but only if I could direct The Little Mermaid. As a concept for a show, The Little Mermaid has it all. Beautiful, clear storytelling, and a brave, desperate heroine who has a truly horrible nemesis. Many opportunities for funny, larger than life characters. All set in two contrasting and opposing worlds; that of the land and that of the sea. The imagination of the whole team fired and suggestions flowed, producing the incredible backdrops, UV lights, sea-creature costumes, props including jellyfish poo, sea shanties, sailor dances, rocks and ramps. Our wonderfully talented cast arrived at rehearsals with lines learned, dances rehearsed, and
gorgeously timed comic moments. It has been a magical process to be immersed in, and I don’t really want to come up for air.
